Astronomy
Standards: 5.1, 5.11 - All students will gain an understanding
of the origin, evolution and structure of the universe.
The student will:
Identify the earth, moon, sun and planets and their
relationship within the solar system.
Investigate the effects of the sun to living things on earth. (Explain how the
sun supplies heat and light to the earth).
Relate the motions of the earth/sun/moon system to units of time, such as days,
months, seasons and years.
Compare and contrast like planets of the solar system.
Using models of the earth, moon and sun investigate the concepts of rotation and
revolution and their
respective effects (day, night, seasons, etc.)
Observe constellations and their apparent motion.
Compare and contrast a lunar and solar eclipse.
Compare the environment of space and earth and list needs in space for human
survival.
Recognize that invisible forces (gravity) can act at a distance
Experiment and investigate ideas related to space exploration.

The student will:
Explain that living things have different levels
of organization: cell, tissue, organ, system, organism.
Define the cell as the building block of the human body
Identify the main function of a system and identify its major organ(s)
(circulatory, respiratory, digestive, nervous, skeletal).
Identify the major systems of the human body and how their functions are
interrelated.
Identify career opportunities related to the study of the human body.
